Tackling the skills shortage head on

Tackling the skills shortage head on With large-scale LNG projects involving significant pipelines scheduled for completion over the next five years, Australia is facing a skills shortage with numerous jobs available, but not enough skilled workers to fill the positions. Here, The Australian Pipeliner looks at the demand and some of the initiatives that the pipeline industry is undertaking to address the issue.

Connecting jobseekers to major projects

Hays Oil & Gas are experts in recruiting qualified, professional and skilled people across the full life cycle of the oil and gas industries – from exploration, project development and construction, to asset operations, production and maintenance. Its clients represent some of the industry’s leading names, from global super majors to specialist niche consultancies.

Landmark projects ensure lucrative careers are in the pipeline

The culmination of infrastructure works across Australia for mining and resources, coupled with landmark projects scheduled in Queensland over the next two decades, will create high demand for specific technical skills. Although lucrative job opportunities for pipeline professionals will be on offer, many of these projects are in unchartered territory for Australia.

Challenge the skills shortage through training

Improving skills in the pipeline industry rests with all of us

Improving skills in the pipeline industry rests with all of us Finding the right people for a project is difficult, especially when demographics show that there are few out there, particularly those with 10 – 15 years experience. Training people who are either new to the industry or who have been around for a while is also hard work, taking effort, money, time and attention. It is up to all of us in the industry to do something about recruiting pipeliners as well as training them, now that we have identified these issues as concerns.

All aboard APIA’s training program

All aboard APIA’s training program The unique nature of the Australian pipeline industry means a specific approach is needed toward training for pipeline engineers working in the country. The Australian Pipeline Industry Association, with Chris Harvey as Project Manager, is designing a training program that is complementary to the requirements of AS2885 and the particular geographic and economic conditions of the Australian industry.

Companies invest in one-stop training solution

Nationally recognised and company training programs developed Romea’s training strategy could be the solution to maintaining your training compliance, not to mention releasing personnel resources to concentrate on what they do best – operate and maintain your pipeline!

Pipeline engineer training

Are you a pipeline engineer? Do you hold a recognisable qualification as a pipeline engineer? Would you like the opportunity to become a qualified pipeline engineer?

Push to get young pipeliners interseted in industry

“With the primary objective of building a gas plant...the demands of administering the construction, and of commissioning the technically advanced plant, were considerable. Labour was scarce and relatively unskilled, and the industrial climate turbulent...”

Why should the pipeline industry invest to retain more graduates?

The skills shortage in engineering has had a definite effect on the pipeline industry, despite competitive salaries. This shortage has driven up wages and, therefore, overall project costs, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

Retain workforces with Bayside

With projected economic growth in the engineering sector over the next ten years, unemployment levels at just 4.3 per cent and more than 28 per cent of our workforce aged 50 and over, businesses will need to work hard at finding and retaining skilled professionals. ‘When the going gets tough, the tough get going!’

With change comes uncertainty but also many opportunities. With the winding down of 2008, as well as the economy, gas is said to be the fastest growing fuel in Australia and hopefully will be the catalyst for significant wealth generation for the country.

APIA pipeline engineer training program

APIA pipeline engineer training program After spending much time considering the needs for pipeline engineer training and how this can be achieved in the context of the Australian pipeline industry, the APIA Board has approved the first steps in developing a program to develop and recognise pipeline engineers who can act as ‘competent persons’ as required by AS2885, the Australian Standard for petroleum pipeline design, construction and operation.
