The perceived advantages of using manually operated systems for cathodic protection are the simplicity of system operation and cost considerations. The major disadvantages of manually operated systems are the lack of alarm notification in case of power failure – which may leave the structure unprotected for an extended period of time – the lack of any recorded historical data to assist in optimum system monitoring and the lack of accuracy of measurement such as instant ‘off’ potential – which may result in wrong system adjustment and consequently over-protection or under-protection of the structure.
