The seminar, sponsored by McConnell Dowell and APA Group, commenced with a welcome by APIA Chief Executive Cheryl Cartwright. Ed Gaykema of Jemena then outlined how AS2885, the Australian Standard for Petroleum Pipelines, was leading the world in safety and environment.

Dan Morgan of McConnell Dowell spoke on the APIA Code of Environmental Practice and how it assists the pipeline industry. Mr Morgan was followed by Ian Spence of CNC Project Management who discussed the Federal Environmental Protection Biodiversity and Conservation Act, outlining debate about the Act as well as what future changes.

Fauna management was discussed by fauna consultant Steve Wilson, who outlined his role on projects and also how information about fauna gathered on pipeline projects enhances scientific knowledge about Australia’s wildlife. Steve Davies of APIA then discussed the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, breaking the subject matter into relevant and easily compressible information for the industry.

OSD Pipelines’ Brian O’Sullivan took the stage to discuss the challenges that Queensland’s coal seam gas boom has introduced from an environmental and safety perspective. His calculations of the level activity, and the safety implications from that activity, generated much discussion amongst participants.

Changes to the industrial relations system were explained by Michael Coonan of Freehills, who set out how the new framework will affect the industry. Oil Search’s Richard Robinson and Boniface Kaile then provided a case study of how Oil Search had created a safety focused culture in their Papua New Guinea operations.

Two presentations on driver safety highlighted the massive impact that safety improvements in this area can make. Alyson Vinciguerra of DBP showcased the system that DBP has implemented and the new improvements, such as anti-drowsiness devices. Tony Newbold of Diversified Engineering then outlined the proactive measures Diversified has utilised to increase driver safety on their projects.

The day concluded with health and wellbeing program facilitator Tammy Neal providing a framework for how to ‘feel better, perform better’ in the workplace and outside.

That evening, well over 200 attendees packed the Sofitel at a dinner sponsored by Fyfe and Enerflex. A presentation on Epic Energy’s QSN Link was given by Epic’s Steve Banning and Michael Schumann. The presentation outlined the QSN Link project that was recently completed, along with future expansion plans.
