A particular challenge facing the pipeline industry is the increased sharing of utility corridors. The rise in population densities in Australian towns and cities is leading to a growing usage of shared utility corridors for power transmission, pipelines and communications infrastructure.

To overcome some of the challenges presented by these close confines, Savcor has successfully designed and installed specialist earthing systems to mitigate low frequency induction voltages and currents, earth potential rise voltages and currents, as well as providing interaction control for foreign service parallelisms and crossings. The company has also designed AS4853 compliant systems using best practice modelling to protect assets and personnel from the risks associated with surge voltages from high voltage phase imbalances, lightning events, telluric phenomena and static build-up. Savcor was also responsible for the design and construction of the only industry specific solid-state surge diverters in Australia.

From the storage dams and distribution networks of metropolitan Australia to the bulk water transmission pipelines linking remote mine sites, irrigation enterprises and power generation companies, Savcor provides corrosion control and cathodic protection for all internal and external steel surfaces, as well as providing specialist products exclusively for the water industry. RECON and MCON technologies for remote control and monitoring from your personal computer, impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy, direct current voltage gradient surveys for metre-by-metre surveying of pipeline cathodic protection and coating defects to sub-metre accuracy and use of Rohrback Cosasco corrosion monitoring equipment are just some of the ways Savcor invests in the future of Australia’s infrastructure.

Savcor has been associated with the provision of services to the following key infrastructure projects:

  • Southern Regional Water Pipeline – Specialist Materials Supply;
  • Western Corridor Recycled Water Scheme – Cathodic protection and AC mitigation earthing design, installation, supply and commissioning;
  • Burdekin Moranbah Pipeline – Cathodic protection and AC mitigation earthing design, installation, supply and commissioning;
  • Gladstone Fitzroy Pipeline – Cathodic protection and AC mitigation earthing design;
  • Northern Pipeline Interconnector – Cathodic protection installation and commissioning; and,
  • Melbourne Water – Term maintenance provider for asset integrity since 2002.
